“The Great Debaters” a movie based on a true story
were blacks lived in fear because of the racial discrimination of the whites
and the civil rights movements. A college teacher by the name of professor
Palson started a tryout for the debate team and his goal was to select the best
four students out of 45. The best four which included: Henry Lowe a very intelligent young men who is easily
distracted by beautiful woman and liquor,
Samantha Booke the first woman to join the debate team, James Farmer, Jr. the son of a minister but
also was very intelligent and James
Farmer Sr a very bright young man that falls in love with Samantha but
does not have a chance. They were all black
student that were trained and guide by Palson to do well in every debate; they
all fought for the rights of the “blacks”. Palson believed that it was time for
the blacks to stand up and be heard; therefore he trained these students so
they can go against other blacks in their community. Palson never tolerated any
nonsense from the students and he believed that they did not have any opponent
whatsoever. The students debated about “blacks” and “whites” and what they are
going through in their everyday life. At one point Palson believed that they
needed a tougher group of students to go against so he set out a debate against
the Harvard University students in which they won the debate and were the first
colored people to have won a debate against them., the main purpose of these
debates were to give “blacks” the same opportunities the “whites” had. At the
end of the movie their names were all over the news and news papers because of
the good work they did and the braveness they had to stand up in what they
believed.
